Exploring the Arctic and Antarctic: Educational and Emotional Polar Expeditions

This week, I’m switching tropical climes for the colder parts of the globe and highlighting expeditions that should absolutely be on your ‘bucket list’.

Polar bears. Penguins. Both are synonymous with the cold and are often found in remote parts of the world. For most of us, wildlife television will be the closest we get to seeing these and many other animals in their natural habitats. For those who are curious and want to get up (relatively!) close, there are expeditions available to remote parts of the world that will not only give you the opportunity to see them, but will also enhance your knowledge.

There are a number of companies that will sail to the Arctic and Antarctic, but there is one, Quark Expeditions, that is truly dedicated to the region and does nothing but Polar expeditions. Their Expedition Team is comprised of seasoned veterans with rich backgrounds in marine biology, history, glaciology, geology and more, all of whom are dedicated to making your journey a trip of a lifetime. As well as seeing the natural beauty of the polar regions, hearing the sound of silence, and seeing the wildlife, you will also have the opportunity to attend lectures on board the ship to immerse yourself in the journey. You will come back knowing and seeing more than you are likely to ever imagine.

Sea kayaking, zodiac cruising, flightseeing, camping and yes, even a polar plunge if you are brave enough, are all available whilst you visit these remote parts of the world. The ships on which you travel are all small and carry no more than 200 passengers, allowing them to navigate to the more difficult-to-reach places within the polar regions. The cabins are supremely comfortable, food is excellent, and facilities can include a spa, sauna, gym and a bar. It is education, underpinned by experts and wrapped in comfort.

Writing this, I’m almost loath to say an expedition to the Antarctic or Arctic should be on a ‘bucket list’ as it suggests you may treat it as a tick-box exercise. However, if you treat a trip there as being educational, quite simply stunning, and you prepare to be emotionally moved, then it really should be right at the top of that list.
